Zen originated in India approximately 1,500 years ago from a Buddhist Monk, Bodhidharma, who taught that the path to achieving enlightenment was through emptying one's mind. During the 6th century A.D. this teaching infiltrated China where the Japanese Buddhist, Dogen, studied the discipline and later introduced it to Japan, establishing the practice, style, and architecture that we now recognize as Zen.
